BSKYB
Working all hours to keep Sky on the air

Background
As the world’s leading satellite broadcaster, BSYKB keeps ahead of the competition by delivering excellent customer service. Their billing and customer contact centre in Dunfermline is home to some 500 people – responsible for 7.4 million BSKYB customers.

What the client needed
BSKYB came to us with an unusual request: could we replace the two existing 800KVA generators in their small plant room with two 1650KVA models. And could we do this without taking up any extra space?

The client also asked us to install a second low voltage mains supply, which along with the generators would give them a full N+1 installation. Oh, and they also wanted to automatically switch the independent supplies across their two buildings to automatically power the other building in the event of a failure.

Last of all, the client needed a guarantee that there would be absolutely no downtime during the project.

The Thistle Generators solution
This complex project started with a fully customised control system and switchboard – as well as the full mechanical design of the installation.

We also installed a bus coupling between the two buildings, to allow full automatic switching in the event of a mains failure. (BSKYB also asked us to ensure the two generators could synchronise precisely with the mains)

The generators were housed in fully customised containers, allowing us to get them into the confined space where they would be installed.

'
Most importantly of all, much of the work took place in the dead of the night – completely avoiding any disruption to the site’s operations.'
Jim Hamilton

Results
We completed the entire project in just five weeks. The building maintained full mains power throughout this time – with no downtime at all.

We also managed to reuse the two 800KVA generators which we replaced. By designing and building custom rigs, we turned them into fully mobile gensets – complete with fuel tanks, cable reels and a tractor unit. As the gensets are fully noise insulated, this gives BSKYB the ability to bring in extra power for outside broadcasts, or in the event of a power failure at another site.

Thanks to our work on this project, BSKYB has appointed us on a maintenance contract to look after the Dunfermline site.
