Royal Bank of
Scotland
Delivering tight specifications in a tight space
Background
The Royal Bank of Scotland is one of the world’s top ten
financial institutions. With billions of pounds passing through
their business, it’s vital their operations can keep
on working through any eventuality. This new build city centre
location
in Manchester was no exception.
What the client needed
We were contracted to this project by NG Bailey. The client’s
main demand was for a compact system with maximum resilience.
It would have to synchronise to N+1, as they have two independent
mains supplies in case of failure.
The client also had particular issues with the location, which
is right in the middle of Manchester city centre. Noise and
environmental pollution was a big concern, as was the size
of the generators
required – a tight fit for narrow city centre streets.
Then there was the location of the gensets – on the building’s
roof. This alone could cause significant problems.
Added to all this, the client needed to test the gensets’ full
KVA, rather than a percentage of the load. In other words,
Royal Bank of Scotland needed absolute assurance that our solution
would work perfectly if it was ever needed.
The Thistle Generators solution
Noise was one of the client’s biggest concerns – they
needed to get it down to just 65 dB at one metre. Our solution
was to custom design the containers, including high-specification
noise insulation. These containers were also built to fit extremely
tight spaces – throwing up other engineering challenges.
As environmental pollution was a big issue, we custom-engineered
a fuel transfer system to completely contain the diesel fuel.
This was particularly challenging as the generators were located
on the roof, but we took it in our stride – including
custom-design of the day tanks to contain the diesel.
Another hurdle was in handling the three 1500KVA generators-
getting them on site and then into location.
Each weighs around 23 tonnes, so this took a good deal of planning – especially
to accommodate the rooftop location. In the end we coordinated
the lift using a 1,000 tonne crane – making for a seamless
installation. We also offloaded and assembled the exhausts
in just one day.
Finally, we trained staff from Royal Bank of Scotland to use
the generator – to make them as self-sufficient as possible.
Results
We completed the full installation with almost no disruption
to other works on site. The client now has a robust, environmentally
sensitive solution – which has been engineered and tested
to deliver at full load. In other word, they’ve got the
peace of mind they need. |
